The Plattekill Fire District Chief was suspended by the district commissioners at an emergency meeting of the board on July 18, following several personnel-related complaints. The commissioners ordered Chief Robert Betanzos Jr. to return the district-owned chief’s vehicle to the district while the suspension is served.
On Saturday, July 28, Betanzos Jr., 55, was arrested by state police at his Gardiner residence and charged with misdemeanor unauthorized use of a vehicle; temporary custody-no consent.
Betanzos was released on an appearance ticket for a future court appearance.
Plattekill Fire District Assistant Chief Keith Way Jr. is serving as the acting fire chief while the issues that resulted in the suspension are investigated further.
