There was a short time when the Our Lady of Lourdes Warriors overtook the Pine Bush Bushmen for the lead at the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association Division I girls’ swimming championship meet.
That was after the 200-yard medley relay, but after the next event, the 100-yard backstroke, the Bushmen were back in the lead and went on to win their seventh straight championship on Saturday afternoon at the Newburgh Free Academy Natatorium.
The Bushmen put some distance between themselves and the Warriors in the final three events, finishing with 500 points. The Warriors scored 352 and the Valley Central Vikings took third with 321 points.
“It’s really magical because we’ve been winning ever since we were in seventh grade,” senior Maya Oakes said. “It’s kind of crazy to continue it and to also have that opportunity to do it. It’s really cool.”
This time, the Bushmen were able to do it without truly dominating swimmers but won the event with depth. Eight athletes scored at least 20 points during the event.
Sadie DeGeorge led the way, winning the 100-yard butterfly and the 500-yard freestyle. She also was part of the winning 200-yard medley relay with Oakes, Ellah Humphrey and Alanah Giannini.
“I didn’t feel my best, but I wasn’t too far off my best times for the season, so I can’t be too mad,” DeGeorge said.
Oakes had a pair of second-place finishes (200-yard individual medley and 100-yard backstroke). She also was part of the second-place 200-yard freestyle relay with Humphrey, Norah Germano and DeGeorge.
Paige Gandolfini won the diving event with an 11-dive score of 468.65. Grace Gibson was eighth. Ella Humphrey won the 100-yard breaststroke, knocking her time down by about a second.
Norah Germano was fourth and fifth in the 200- and 500-yard freestyles. Giannini was fourth in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke. Liana Williams finished fifth in the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard breaststroke.
“I feel like it’s surreal in so many ways because we’ve been through so many different swimmers as the time has progressed,” Pine Bush coach John Barth said. “But they are just as together, and they want to win. They work really hard every day, and it’s been great. It’s been a great ride.”
The Vikings were without one of their top swimmers – Samantha Messing – on Saturday, but still managed third-place finish.
Emmy White was their top finisher, taking second place in the 500-yard freestyle and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle. She also was part of two fourth-place relays, the 200- and 400-yard freestyles.
Molly Hoover was second in the 100-yard butterfly and sixth in the 200-yard freestyle. She also was part of the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays.
Eleanor O’Neill was second in the diving event with an 11-dive score of 442.47. Kaedence Bresnick was first, Jillian Kendrick was sixth and Leah Rieber took seventh. Julia Biagini was 10th.
Their strength in the diving event had the Vikings in first place by 25 points, heading into Saturday’s swimming events.
Division 2
Eighth-grader Chloe Filipkowski qualified for the Section 9 meet in two events and Kaitlyn Bonner qualified in another as the Wallkill Panthers finished eighth in the Division 2 meet on Friday at Washingtonville High School with 95 points.
Filipkowski finished 6th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a personal best time of 1:16.90 and was seventh in the 100-yard freestyle with a personal best time of 59.28 seconds. Bonner qualified for sectionals in the 100-yard backstroke with a season-best time of 1:08.08. She was also ninth in the 100-yard butterfly.
New Paltz won the team championship with 480 points.

Wallkill’s 200-yard medley relay team of Drackett, Filipkowski, Bonner and Badu were ninth and the team of Betfield, Tamara Brand, Elle Yeomans and Badu were 14th in the 200-yard medley relay.
Bonner, Drackett, Yeomans and Filipkowski were ninth in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
