NYMA public hearing remains open

While New York Military Academy is making progress when it comes to getting repairs on its water lines and fire hydrants, the school hasn’t yet done enough to assure the Town Board that the work is done to their satisfaction.

A nearly-year-long public hearing on the matter (and an unsafe building) continued this past Tuesday, and will stay open through at least the board’s Tuesday, Sept. 17 meeting.

Jason Li from NYMA was at last week’s meeting and reported, regarding the fire hydrants, that three on Faculty Drive have good pressure, one needs a part to be returned to working order, and four have pressure, but it is low. Li said the needed repairs to the hydrants should be complete within three weeks.

That was part of what the Town Board wanted to hear – Supervisor Josh Wojehowski has said repeatedly that there must be a fire protection plan in place before students return to campus later this month.

Building Inspector Gary Vinson was at the meeting and said he is pleased with the progress NYMA has made, and also told the board that due to the size of the water lines in the ground at the school – three- and four-inch mains, he said – “there is a limited amount of water they can get.” (For comparison’s sake, most town water mains are eight inches.) He added that to his understanding NYMA officials have been in contact with the local fire departments to make sure there is a fire protection plan in place.

Vinson suggested that the Town Board involve the town’s engineers in making sure the work is done to the satisfaction of the board. “I think with his (Engineer Sean Arnott) help we can finish this up shortly,” he said.
