NW declares property unsafe

Posted

The New Windsor town board has deemed the property identified as 18 Victory Lane in town as unsafe and the town will be sending out a request for proposal [RFP] to tear it down.

According to Town Supervisor George Meyers, the cost of the demolition will be handled by the property owner. If the property owner does not pay, the Town of New Windsor will be reimbursed for the work by Orange County and the county will be working with the property owner to resolve the issue.

According to New Windsor and Orange County records, the property in question is currently owned by resident John Constantino. The current property is 6,656 square feet in total with two floors at 3,328 square feet. Town reports have listed that Mr. Constantino has not lived in the property for the past five years and the property is currently vacant.

Constantino was requested to appear before the town board to oppose the determination of the town or to propose remedial measures for the property. The property has visible structure concerns, the roof appears to be falling in on the building, there is an abandoned vehicle on the property and additional materials were off to the side on the property.

According to Meyers, he had an opportunity to inspect the property with the town fire inspector back in May and was surprised to see its current condition. “I could not believe the condition of this house,” Meyers said.
