Local first responders were put to the test Sunday to locate a 39-year-old intellectually-disabled Shawangunk man.

The initial call was dispatched to the Town of Shawangunk Police Department a little after 3p.m. The agencies searched the woods of Wallkill and along the edges of the Wallkill River.

Participating agencies included Wallkill Fire Department, Ulster County Sheriff’s Department as well as New York State Police Highland. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Forest Rangers helped search for the missing man on their snowmobiles. Four K-9 search and rescue units were provided by the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control. The Ulster County Emergency Services Department was also on scene with two drones. The Wallkill Volunteer Ambulance Corps was on standby and many more agencies assisted with the search.

Shawangunk Police Chief Gerald Marlatt confirmed that his department found the missing man at approximately 6:30 p.m. along Route 44/55 in Gardiner by Lombardi’s Restaurant.

“Because it worked out well, we located him with no serious problems or any injuries, I think it worked out great to be a good exercise for any future incident to show that all the agencies can intertwine and work collectively,” he said.
