Maybrook prepares for winter

Winter is coming soon and Maybrook village officials have ambitious plans to get various projects done before the snows fly. At a meeting last week, the village board voted to accept Logan’s Way, off Clark Place, as a village street and add it to the local highway inventory. From now on, the village Public Works Dept. (DPW) will maintain the street, including snow plowing.

The reclamation of Prospect Avenue is now complete and crews are scheduled to pave it on Mon., Oct. 25. Also on the schedule for pre-winter completion are repair of the storm drain and pipe at the end of Adams Drive and sidewalk replacement on Homestead Avenue from Oak to Williams streets.

Mayor Dennis Leahy could barely contain his excitement about a letter he recently received from the N.Y.S. Dept. of Transportation (DOT), informing him that the agency has begun the design phase on a project to make repairs along eastern county roads, including various sidewalk and curb-ramp locations along Homestead Avenue.

“I’m very excited about this news,” he said, thanking Village Engineer Sean Hoffman for all his help. “It is anticipated that this project in the village will be constructed in spring/summer 2022. Many hours have been spent discussing repairs needed on the state-owned sidewalks on Rt. 208 (Homestead Ave.). This is good news for the village!”

The village DPW is also busy conducting its annual leaf pick-up. Leaves must be bagged in biodegradable bags, which are available free at the Govt. Center or at the DPW garage. Bagged leaves will be picked up by Maybrook’s garbage contractor County Waste on Thursdays. If you prefer to discard your bagged leaves, a dumpster is at the Govt. Center by the Police Dept. behind the pavilion.

In other business, Tina Fassnacht was appointed associate village justice for a term to end April 22 (when the village reorganizes for the new fiscal year) at an annual salary of $1,500. Fassnacht is also a Village of Montgomery justice, She joins Maybrook elected Justice William Schimpf.

The village board voted unanimously to adopt a local emergency order setting a Halloween curfew. The curfew prohibits minors under the age of 18 from village streets from 10 p.m., Sat., Oct. 30, through 6 a.m., Mon., Nov. 11.

The “Halloween Drive-Thru” is set for 5-6 p.m., Sun., Oct. 31, in the Frederick Myers Veterans Memorial Park. Residents and their children aged 12 and under can drive up and receive a Halloween treat. No foot traffic is permitted. Traffic must enter the park on Tower Avenue and exit through Schipps Lane. The event is sponsored by the Village of Maybrook, Wallkill Valley Federal Savings and Loan, Maybrook Kiwanis Club, Shoprite, Maybrook Police Dept., and the Maybrook Fire Department. E-Rock Entertainment and the Walden Rotary will also join in the Drive-Thru.

While the village planning board and zoning board of appeals remain meeting on-line, Leahy said the village board will keep meeting in person at the Govt. Center because COVID-19 cases in Orange County and in the Town of Montgomery are dropping. The next village board meeting is 7 p.m., Mon., Oct. 25.
