Maybrook moves forward on infrastructure projects

The Village of Maybrook is moving forward on several infrastructure projects which will enhance the village.

The village has been working with the New York State Department of Transportation in securing the permits needed to replace the sidewalks on Homestead Avenue from Oak Street to Williams Street.

This sidewalk project is funded by the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York Grant, which Sen. James Skoufis secured for the village in 2019.

Mayor Dennis Leahy hopes to have the project completed soon.
“Our goal is to get this project completed before winter,” he said at last Monday’s village board meeting.

Leahy added that the reconstruction of the sewer line on Adams Drive is also a priority. A special order for a replacement pipe was ordered and has arrived. Preparations are currently underway.
The Maybrook Department of Public Works has done preparation work on Prospect Avenue by replacing sewer manholes, valve boxes as well as two fire hydrants before the road is milled and paved. The milling of Prospect Avenue is scheduled to begin, weather permitting, the week of Sept. 13. Leahy stated that residents will be advised when work is scheduled to begin.

Negotiations continue with the property owners for the Main Street connection to the Galaxy property. Galaxy Limited is working on their easements for their utilities. They have also had discussions with Regional Rail about the Main Street Railroad crossing to connect Main Street to the Galaxy property.

In March, Maybrook annexed the property for the Galaxy project following a vote by the Montgomery Town Board and the Maybrook Village Board. Maybrook annexed a property of approximately 82.9 acres of mostly wetlands in the Town of Montgomery. This land lies to the southeast of the village and includes the former Maybrook rail yard. One parcel lies west of Barron Road and the other east of State Route 208.

Galaxy Limited, LLC proposes a business park with more than 800,000 square feet of business, commercial, industrial or warehouse space with direct railroad access as well as access to I-84 via State Route 208. A road will connect the business park to Maybrook via Henry Henning Drive.

The business park will be serviced by water and sewer from the Village of Maybrook. After a lengthy State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQR) process, the Maybrook Village Board adopted a negative declaration, meaning that the project will not have significant adverse environmental impacts.

The property will lead to an easier taxing structure. All of the taxing jurisdictions will be in the Village of Maybrook. Another benefit of the project is that it will create more than 600 jobs. This project would drive traffic into downtown Maybrook, causing an uptick in sales for local businesses. In addition, the project will also create a path to Stewart State Forest, which is currently inaccessible from Maybrook.

Leahy noted at last Monday’s village board meeting that he will keep residents updated as the project moves forward.

“I will keep everyone updated on any new progress,” he said.
