Maybrook judge retires

Posted

During the past 37 years, William Schimpf has served the Maybrook public in just about every official capacity there is. But “with very deeply held totally mixed emotions and after very careful consideration”, he wrote Mayor Dennis Leahy, he is calling it quits.

Schimpf will “resign and retire” from his latest post, Maybrook Village Justice, effective August 26.

Schimpf was re-elected justice in March 2021 to a four-year term. He was first elected judge in 2013. Before that, he served as mayor (1994-2002), deputy mayor (1990-1994), village trustee (1979-1990), planning board member (1975-1979) and youth commissioner (1974-1975).

At Monday’s Village Board meeting, Schimpf’s resignation/retirement was accepted unanimously with Trustee Kevin Greany summing up the board’s feelings: “I wish him the best.”

With nearly three years left on Schimpf’s term, that will leave the village with only Acting Justice Tina Fassnacht. Leahy said he and the Village Board “are looking at our options going forward”.

Although not at Monday’s meeting, Schimpf earlier said, “It’s been quite a run. It has been my pleasure to serve for 37 years.”

In his letter, he wrote: “I want to thank everyone for allowing me the privilege of serving this truly wonderful community that we call home for these many years.”
