On Monday evening the Marlborough Town Board appointed Frank Zebrowski and Kevin Coronel as part-time Police Officers for the purpose of attending the Ulster County Police Academy.

Supervisor Scott Corcoran said he and Councilman Ed Molinelli interviewed, “these two nice gentlemen, who we like, so Frank and Kevin it’s a pleasure to have you here tonight and your families and friends and it is going to be a pleasure to have you on our force.”

Police Chief Gerald Cocozza presented each with their police badges. He said several years ago the Ulster County Community College developed a program called Phase I and Phase II Police Officer Academy Training.

“Phase I is generally just like college classes of 6 months of pretty intense training of everything you need to know to be a Police Officer with the exception of some tactical and firearm stuff that they hold off for Phase II,” he said.
Cocozza said Phase II, “is a two week training course that they have to take to complete their certification, and to do Phase II they have to be hired by a police department in order to be sponsored for Phase II.”

Cocozza said an individual takes Phase I on their own, which costs them $6,000. He described Phase II as two weeks of the, “nitty-gritty” of Police work, focusing on firearms and other integral things an officer needs to know to get a certificate. This also costs the individual about $500. Following this is the requirement of completing 180 hours of field training.

“It’s no easy adventure and I’m confident that these two candidates will be able to surpass anything we could give them to tackle and they’ll do it with flying colors,” Cocozza said. “I am very excited to be able to give them this opportunity and of course in the long-run we are going to benefit because we’ll have two very well trained officers here at the Town of Marlborough.” He thanked the Town Board for supporting this initiative.

Town Clerk Colleen Corcoran administered the oath of office to both candidates.

“We appreciate them coming to the Town of Marlborough and being on the force. I believe we have one of the best forces in the county led by one of the best chiefs of the county,” he said.
