Marlboro Library October Book Club Meeting
All are welcome to attend the Marlboro Library’s Book Club! The club will meet at the library on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m., to discuss Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt. Copies are available for pick-up at the circulation desk. RSVP at marlborolibrary.org. Walk-ins welcome.
Borscht Belt Artifacts: Relics of the Catskill Resort Age
Did you ever visit one of the famous Catskill Resort hotels of Sullivan or Ulster counties? Come relive these memories and join Alex Prizgintas at the Marlboro Library on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m., for a presentation on “Borscht Belt Artifacts: Relics from the Catskill Resort Age.” This program will cover a broad history of the Borscht Belt, extending back to the late 1830s. Dark Side of Marlboro Historical Walking Tours
Drownings, murders, a spiritualist con man on the run—did it happen in Marlboro? Join us for a spooky walking tour through the village of Marlboro. Guides will take you through town to various historical sites and relate long-forgotten tales unearthed in our local history collection. Tours will take place on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., and on Sunday, Oct. 27, at 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. In-person registration is required; tickets are $10 each and are available for purchase at the Marlboro Library circulation desk. Dark Side of Marlboro Presentation
An alternative to our Dark Side of Marlboro Walking Tour, this in-person presentation at the Marlboro Library will recount some of the stories featured on the tour! On Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m., hear tales from Marlboro’s spookier past. RSVP at marlborolibrary.org, walk-ins welcome.
 
Medicare Consultations with the Ulster County Office for the Aging
A representative from the Ulster County Office for the Aging will be at the Marlboro Library on Monday, Oct. 21, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., to help those interested sign up for Medicare and choose a plan that best fits their lifestyles. Appointments are required. Please call 845-340-3456 to make an appointment and specify that you would like to meet with Peggy at the Marlboro Free Library.
 
Introduction to Breathwork Meditation Workshop
Unwind with an introductory meditation workshop on Thursday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. Discover the transformative power of diaphragmatic breathing, also known as deep breathing. This program will include a short introduction, followed by a guided 15-minute meditation, and will end with time for participants to share their experiences and ask questions. MFL Hook & Needle: Knitting & Crocheting Group
Join us at the Marlboro Library for an informal meetup on select Mondays from 6-7:30 p.m., where knitting and crocheting enthusiasts can come together to socialize, share tips, and work on projects. Vet2Vet Coffee Hour, Fridays at the Marlboro Library
Organized in collaboration with Vet2Vet of Ulster County and the Hudson Valley Center for Veteran Reintegration, this Veteran Coffee Hour aims to provide a safe space for veterans to connect, share experiences, and find support. All veterans are welcome to attend on Fridays from 1:30-2:30 p.m. in the Marlboro Library community room. Walk-ins welcome.

Marlboro Students Collect Apples to Help Combat Food Insecurity
Students in Brianna Milkins and Meghan Quinn’s Foundations class at Marlboro High School recently took a field trip to the Hudson Valley Research Center in Highland, where they helped collect apples to be donated to local families in need. While at the Cornell Cooperative Extension facility, the students also learned about agriculture, food insecurity, and the importance of volunteerism. In total, they collected 840 pounds of apples. Another group will visit Prospect Hill Orchards next week to collect more apples. Great job, Dukes!
 
Lions Club Provides Free Vision Screenings
On Sept. 23, Marlboro Elementary School students received free vision screenings from members of the Marlboro-Milton Lions Club. Using a Spot Vision Screener, the Lions assessed each student’s eyes for potential issues such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Students received a sticker and a stuffed lion toy for their participation. Thank you to the Lions for providing this valuable service!
 
Kindergarten “Apple Day”
On Sept. 24, Rachel Vallone’s kindergarten class at Marlboro Elementary School enjoyed taste-testing apples and sampling warm applesauce. It was an apple-tastic day!
 
Assembly member Visits MHS
Thank you to Assembly member Jonathan Jacobson for visiting Marlboro High School on Sept. 24 to speak with students in Brian Barbulean’s Public Policy and Engaged Citizenship classes about the importance of local government and civic engagement. Your insights were invaluable!

Father Tom will be away at Pastor’s School from Sept. 30 through Oct. 4. There will be no Adoration on Friday, Oct. 4, and no daily Mass during this time.

Weekly Recipe
Coconut Crunch Apple Pie Lorraine P.
Ingredients:
1/3 cup sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 tsp nutmeg
2 tbsp flour
1/2 tsp cinnamon
4 cups tart apples
2 tbsp lemon juice
2 tbsp butter
1 beaten egg (coconut topping)
1/3 cup sugar (coconut topping)
1/4 cup milk (coconut topping)
1/8 tsp salt (coconut topping)
2 cups coconut (coconut topping)
Directions:
1 Combine sugar, brown sugar, nutmeg, flour, and cinnamon.
2 Prepare apples; pare, core, and slice. Arrange in tightly packed layers in a pastry-lined pan. Sprinkle the sugar-spice mixture over each layer.
3 Sprinkle with lemon juice and dot with butter.
4 Cut a double thickness of aluminum foil to fit over the filling and press firmly. Bake at 375°F for 30 minutes.
5 Remove from oven, remove foil, and flatten apple slices with a spatula. Cover with coconut topping.
6 Continue baking at 375°F for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
7 To make the coconut topping, beat the egg until light and fluffy. Stir in sugar, milk, salt, and coconut.
 
Ongoing Events and Reminders
First Presbyterian Church of Marlboro will hold a breakfast fundraiser on Sunday, Nov. 3, from 8 to 10:30 a.m. to raise funds for an AED for their building.
Marlboro UNICO’s 4th Annual Italian Oktoberfest at Benmarl Winery will be held on Sunday, Oct. 6, from noon to 4 p.m. Tickets are $50. Children 12 and under are free and do not need a ticket. IDs will be checked at the door.
