The Marlboro Dukes’ team of Emma LaPolla and Gwen Benninger went from sixth to second when they were the runners-up at the Mid Hudson Athletic League championships on Wednesday at Franklin D. Roosevelt High School in Staatsburg.

LaPolla and Benninger entered the tournament as the sixth seed, marched through the tournament until they encountered the tournament’s fifth seed: Our Lady of Lourdes’ Elia Bonavoglia and Emma Beradis, who had already dispatched the tournament’s top seed: Spackenkill’s Thanya Tran and Alison Lee.

LaPolla and Benninger gave Bonavoglia and Beradis as much as they could handle, taking them to three sets.

They took the first set, 6-4, but then lost the next two sets, 6-2, 6-4, as Bonavoglia and Beradis won the championship.

LaPolla and Benninger clinched their berth in the championship match when they beat the tournament’s No. 2 seed, Lucy French and Coco Hamilton of Red Hook, 6-2, 6-1.

They also advanced to this week’s Section 9 tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday at MatchPoint Tennis Center in Goshen.

LaPolla and Benninger opened the tournament on Oct. 15 with a 6-0, 6-1 win over No. 10 Jenna Vasquez and Helena Nastasi of New Paltz and advanced to the semifinals with a 6-6 (7-3), 6-2 win over Our Lady of Lourdes’ Olivia Riache and Amy Tomann, the tournament’s third seed.

Marlboro’s Janice Werba and Jordana Scrivani also qualified for the Section 9 tournament when they reached the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-0, win over No. 9 Amy O’Malley and Ellie Fragetta of Wallkill. However, they were beaten by the tournament’s top seed, Thanya Tran and Alison Lee of Spackenkill.

Highland’s Sierra Spinelli and Maddie Chaffee lost a play-in match, 11-9, to Onteora’s Nico Stackpole and Lily McNamara.

Highland’s Lena Tran qualified for the Section 9 tournament in the singles bracket by reaching the quarterfinals, where she was beaten by No. 4 Katie Park of Spackenkill. Tran, who entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed, opened the tournament with a 6-2, 6-0 win over No. 12 Eva Orfanos of Ellenville.

Marlboro’s Chloe Gaer was seeded sixth and was beaten 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 by Red Hook’s Aliyah Makebish, the No. 10 seed, in the first round.
