Locals react to Cuomo resignation

Reaction was swift, Tuesday, to the announcement from Governor Andrew Cuomo that he plans to resign in 14 days in the wake of reports by the New York State Attorney General that he sexually harassed multiple women in violation of state and federal law.

“The Governor’s resignation was a necessary step toward restoring trust, transparency, and accountability in our state government and represents a historic shift in New York State,” said State Senator Michelle Hinchey (D-Ulster). “This moment would not be possible without the brave women who shared their stories in the face of fear, retribution and scare tactics. We owe them a tremendous amount of gratitude, for, without their courage, we would not be here today.

“At this critical moment, we need leaders who are solely focused on rebuilding our state and improving the lives of people and families everywhere.”

“While we continue to face many challenges, I look forward to working with Kathy Hochul, a fellow upstate woman, who will make history, and more importantly, be a strong partner in delivering meaningful results for our communities.”

Lt. Governor Hochul, who will take office in two weeks is from the Buffalo region. She will become New York’s first woman governor.

Ulster County Executive Pat Ryan called it an important moment for New York, and a necessary one in light of Cuomo’s “reprehensible and abhorrent behavior.”

“We will now finally have our first woman Governor, and I am very optimistic about the future of New York under Governor Kathy Hochul’s leadership. She is the real deal - a proven public servant who understands how government works and will lead our State forward with integrity,” Ryan said. “She has always been there for Ulster County and I am excited to continue to partner with her in service to our County and State.”

“Governor Cuomo’s announcement that he is stepping down is the right one for New York. He no longer has the trust necessary to govern effectively,” said Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson (D-Newburgh). “I have known Lt. Governor Kathy Hochul for many years and have full confidence in her ability to lead the state. I look forward to working with her.”
State Senator James Skoufis also weighed in.

“Today’s announcement by Governor Cuomo is a necessary first step on New York’s long road to healing. While I wish the decision had been made much, much sooner, I welcome this opportunity to turn the page on Cuomo’s documented patterns of abuse, harassment, and bullying, and I applaud the brave women who came forward to demand change,” Skoufis said.

“To lift the long-standing fog of mistrust and misogyny from the Governor’s Mansion, those in power must actively acknowledge and address our past failings.”
U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) also released a statement.

“First, I want to commend the brave women who stepped forward and courageously told their stories” Schumer said. “There is no place for sexual harassment, and today’s announcement by Governor Cuomo to resign was the right decision for the good of the people of New York. I have full confidence that Lt Governor Hochul will establish a professional and capable administration. I have spoken with Lt Governor Hochul and look forward to working together to help the people of New York.
