Library reading room addition open for programming

The Wallkill Public Library’s recently completed reading room is open for business, and the library’s Mahjong Club is celebrating!

The 350-square-foot addition on the west side of the library was constructed during the course of the past year. Designed as a space for small meetings, programming, and reading, the room will provide better access to those with mobility issues who might not be able to make it down the stairs to the children’s room, where previously groups like the Mahjong Club have met. Though some finishing touches are still needed (such as a TV monitor and window shades), users are now able to enjoy the added first-floor space.

The Mahjong Club, which has been meeting in the basement of the Wallkill Reformed Church during construction, is celebrating their return to the library with light refreshments at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12.

“We’re excited to welcome our Mahjong players back – we’ve missed them!” said library director Lisa Palmer. “It will be wonderful to take one more step toward normalcy and breathe some life back into the building.”

The Mahjong Club meets each Wednesday from 1-4 p.m. Library users, including program participants, are still required to wear masks while inside the building.
