In his art work Jebah Baum harnesses the course materialities of clay, rusted steel, cement, rough hewn wood and the velvety blacks of lithography ink to create sculptures and prints that resonate with a compelling sensuality. In a continual play of presence and absence, geometric shapes and subtle allusions to volume appear to reference non representational, semi-dimensional figures which through combination and repetition mimic strategies found in the natural world. Via their contradictory relationship to mimesis, Baum’s sculptures and prints invoke an affinity with surrealist practices and a poetic engagement with form.
