Jacobson calls for removal of sex offenders from school vicinity

Posted

Assemblymember Jonathan Jacobson (D-104) has written to Division of Criminal Justice Services Executive Deputy Commissioner Michael C. Green, requesting the agency move four registered sex offenders who have been placed at the Orange Lake Motel. This location is within 300 feet of Building Blocks Childcare Center. Both the motel and Building Blocks are in the Town of Newburgh.

Jacobson wrote, “While it is technically legal to house these offenders in such close proximity to nursery schools, to do so goes against common sense. Three of the men are level 2 offenders whose victims were all underage. The fourth is designated a level 3 offender because of the higher possibility that he will commit another offense.”

Jacobson is a co-sponsor of a bill (A538/S1778) by Assemblymember Edward Braunstein and Senator James Skoufis, who also represents the Town of Newburgh, which would restrict sex offenders from residing within 1,000 feet of a school or playground. This bill also amends the law to protect nursery schools such as Building Blocks.
