Hate has no place here

The Progress Pride Flag displayed in front of the Marlborough Town Hall last year during LGBTQ+ Pride month sent a clear message that hate has no place in our town and those who practice it have no voice here.

Displaying this flag leads us to conclude that the members of the Marlborough Town Board support their constituents, neighbors and loved ones who are struggling against the hatred fueled by the ignorant propaganda that puts our hard-fought rights at risk. Attacks on the LGBTQ+ community continue at an alarming rate, especially against transgender youth. We see fascist policies banning books and denying people the physical and mental health care they need and deserve. The law guaranteeing the federal right to same-sex marriage shares some legal language with the now-overturned Roe v. Wade. That could be the next target of hateful policies attempting to silence and erase us.

The Stonewall Uprising happened 54 years ago when mostly transgender women of color fought back against police brutality. Now, there are openly gay NYPD officers and first responders as there are in Marlborough. They serve and protect even those who hate them.

Most Americans support us, as evidenced in an NBC News report stating, “A clear majority of Americans who don’t identify as LGBTQ believe companies should publicly support the community, according to a new survey from gay rights organization GLAAD.”

Thank you, Supervisor Corcoran and members of the Marlborough Town Board, for your continued support of the LGBTQ+ community and for taking a stand against the hate and ignorance of a vocal minority. I ask the Southern Ulster Times to follow suit and cease repeatedly publishing correspondence from writers who choose to spread blatant hateful nonsense and crackpot conspiracy theories. We know their opinions. We’re tired of reading them. Hate has no place here.
