Fundraiser promises to be a ‘cat-tastic’ event

On Sunday, May 21, the Humane Society of Walden and Will Spay Pets will host a cat-themed fundraiser. This collaborative event, dubbed “Cat Scratcher” will benefit the Humane Society and Will Spay Pets, with the goal of reducing the number of stray cats in the area by raising money for both organizations and spreading the word about the benefits of spaying and neutering.

Doors open at noon, and calling begins at 1 p.m., at the Maybrook Senior Center, 111 Schipps Lane, Maybrook, NY 12543. The cost of admission is $20 in advance at waldenhumane.org/catbingo or $25 at the door. Attendees can bring their own refreshments to enjoy while trying for a chance to win cat scratchers and trees, generously donated by Will Spay Pets. There will be chances to win raffle baskets as well!

Throughout 2022, the Humane Society of Walden witnessed a surge in the number of stray kittens, resulting in the intake of over 160 felines. The age of these kittens varied greatly, with some being newborns requiring bottle-feeding and others being shy kittens in need of socialization. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of their foster volunteers, each of these kittens received the necessary care and attention needed to thrive until they were ready to be adopted.

“We are incredibly excited to partner with Will Spay Pets for this fun and meaningful fundraiser,” said Tracy Wilson, President of the Humane Society of Walden. “By hosting this event, we can raise awareness about the importance of spaying and neutering as a way to prevent pet overpopulation and reduce the number of homeless animals in our community. Not only will the Cat Scratcher event allow us to raise crucial funds for our adoption program, but it also presents an excellent opportunity to educate the public on the benefits of spaying and neutering their pets. Our adoption process includes providing medical care, spaying/neutering, vaccinations and microchipping for all kittens and cats that come through our doors. By providing these services, we ensure that each pet is healthy and ready for their new forever home. We hope that through our collaboration with Will Spay Pets, we can make a significant impact in reducing the number of unwanted cats in our community and find loving homes for those in need.”

Will Spay Pets is a non-profit organization dedicated to reducing pet overpopulation through low-cost spay/neuter services. The organization has provided funding for affordable spay and neuter surgeries for over 5,000 cats and dogs in the Hudson Valley since 2009. They currently, partner with the Town of Montgomery and the Town of Crawford (including the villages of Maybrook, Montgomery, Pine Bush, and Walden) in Orange County, offering town residents a $25 cat spay/neuter fee with rabies shot included. They also have a $5 feral cat spay/neuter program.

“Spaying and neutering is a critical part of reducing the number of unwanted cats in our communities,” said Diane Decker, Founder and President of Will Spay Pets. “Unaltered cats can quickly produce large litters of kittens, which can lead to overcrowded animal shelters. By spaying and neutering our cats, we can prevent these litters from being born and help control the population of stray and feral cats.”
