The Cornwall Dragons Boys Basketball team closed out a busy week with a thrilling 52-51 victory over the Valley Central Vikings on Saturday, Jan. 11 in Montgomery. Jack Demetriow led the Dragons with 15 points, while Malik Sonko chipped in 11 to secure Cornwall’s sixth win of the season.
The Dragons (6-1) prevailed in the nail-biter after hitting a decisive free throw in the final seconds, handing Valley Central (6-2) its second consecutive loss. The win also marked the second straight triumph for Cornwall against Valley Central.
Cornwall’s week started with a tough 49-41 loss to the Washingtonville Wizards on Monday, snapping the Dragons’ perfect start to the season. The Wizards’ defensive pressure held Cornwall to its lowest-scoring output of the year. Demetriow scored 13 points in the loss, with Sonic contributing 9 and Mohammad Aljamal adding 8. The defeat dropped the Dragons to 4-1, while Washingtonville improved to 3-2.
Cornwall bounced back on Thursday, Jan. 9, with a commanding 61-51 victory over Minisink Valley. The Dragons controlled the pace throughout, ensuring a return to winning form. Minisink Valley fell to 0-8 on the season.
With momentum restored, Cornwall now looks ahead to a favorable matchup against Port Jervis at home on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
The Dragons and Vikings are slated to meet again in a highly anticipated rematch on Friday, February 7, in Cornwall.
