Coleman receives 3-year VC contract, no tenure

Posted

Valley Central Board of Education President Joseph Bond, along with Board of Education members, unanimously approved a contract between the district and long-time Valley Central educator Tammy Coleman to the applause of a small crowd during a special meeting held on Thursday, June 30, 2022.

According to Coleman, the contract stipulates that she can stay in her position for three years in lieu of giving her tenure. Coleman will stay under the current collective bargaining agreement (CBA).

In recent weeks, supporters of Coleman have attended Board of Education and special meetings after reports surfaced that district officials were seeking to fire her with only three years remaining until she retires. With over 23 years in the Valley Central School District, Coleman was touted as a beloved member of the school district by her supporters.

Coleman is currently the Director of the Annual Professional Performance Review, the Director of Data and Testing, and the Director of the Universal Pre-K program. In 2021, Coleman applied for a UPK Expansion Grant and the VCSD was awarded $400,000 in Expansion Grant Funding.

The Wallkill Valley Times reached out to the Valley Central School District for a comment on the agreement, but as of press time has not received a response. School Board President Joseph Bond responded to requests stating that the Board is not permitted to comment on individual personnel matters.
