The City of Newburgh ushered in the holiday season Saturday with its annual holiday parade and tree lighting ceremony. Families gathered to enjoy festive floats, warm drinks, and community spirit as Broadway lit up with holiday cheer.
The festivities began at 3 p.m., when holiday-themed floats and decorated trucks assembled at the Department of Public Works Headquarters at 88 Pierces Road. Leading the parade were city police vehicles, followed by a fire truck carrying Santa and Mrs. Claus alongside Mayor Torrance Harvey. Other parade participants included residents of “Who-Burgh,” a jailed Grinch, the Recreation Express, Toy Story characters, and city officials spreading Christmas cheer.
The parade route traveled through South Street, Broadway, Dubois Street, and the East End, eventually reaching the waterfront. Families and children along Wisner Avenue cheered for Santa and received candy from the floats. With the route posted online, many planned their viewing spots in advance, with Delano Hitch Park and the Newburgh Armory Unity Center serving as designated gathering areas.
As evening approached and temperatures dropped, residents made their way to Lower Broadway, where the city’s Christmas tree awaited its annual lighting. Families enjoyed Christmas music, hot drinks provided by the Salvation Army, and snacks while braving the cold.
“We love supporting what the City of Newburgh does for the community,” said Robert Espinosa, who attended with his wife and children. “The parade was great, and now we’re excited to see the lights.” Espinosa emphasized the importance of community togetherness during the holiday season. “Keep God first, keep the community going, help each other out, and we’ll get through it together,” he said.
City police officers and auxiliary officers directed traffic, mingled with families, and maintained a safe environment. “It’s an honor to serve and watch the tree lighting to bring brightness and love to the holidays,” said Auxiliary Officer Camren Manning. Sergeant Herman Shannon echoed the sentiment, urging residents to “love one another, care for one another, and share things with one another.”
As the parade concluded on Grand Street and circled the Christmas tree, Santa Claus received a warm welcome from the crowd. Mayor Harvey addressed attendees, thanking city staff, officials, and families for making the celebration a success.
A countdown ensued to light the tree, but the first attempt failed, with some jokingly blaming the Grinch. On the second countdown, the tree illuminated Broadway to cheers and applause. Families took photos as the holiday centerpiece shone brightly.
To cap off the evening, city officials raffled bicycles for children to take home, adding an extra dose of holiday joy to a night filled with community spirit and festive fun.
