Christmas Bird Count

Posted

Carry on the Christmas Bird Count tradition started by Dan Smiley at the Mohonk Mountain House and contribute to community science. With an early morning start on the grounds of the Mountain House, we will record the numbers and species of birds we see during the morning. We will follow the same route Dan Smiley followed beginning in 1950 as he led members of the John Burroughs Natural History Society and research assistants along the carriage roads counting winter birds. Come prepared for birding in cold weather with many stops along the 2 miles to record our sightings. Bring your own binoculars. This program will be held outdoors on Mountain House lands and a COVID-19 waiver will need to be completed 24 hours prior to the program. Free parking will be provided. Come dressed for winter weather with warm boots, gloves, hats, and insulated layers. This is a free program for ages 12 and up, and children must always be accompanied by an adult. Space is limited and registration is required. Masks are required for those not fully vaccinated.
