Construction at the Delano-Hitch Aquatic Center continues to progress, with the installation of splash pad amenities and water filling in the pool signaling that the long-awaited reopening is near.
The new water recreation facility, located at the corner of Route 9W and Washington Street in the City of Newburgh, is expected to open around Memorial Day weekend. The center has been closed since 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic prompted its shutdown. A subsequent inspection revealed the need for extensive upgrades, keeping the facility closed even after pandemic restrictions were lifted.
During the closure, the city provided temporary water amenities and installed splash pads at several parks to ensure families still had access to summer recreation.
The newly constructed center includes a six-lane ADA-accessible pool, a splash pad park, a pool house with locker rooms, concession stands and an equipment room. A new lounge area with landscaping is also being added, and the parking lot is set to be repaved.
The project is being managed by engineering firm Clark Patterson Lee and is being completed at no direct cost to city taxpayers. Funding is provided through the city’s allocation of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds and an $8 million grant from the NY SWIMS Initiative, supported by Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office.
A prominent feature of the new facility will be a rebuilt archway entrance. The original arch, constructed in 1932, was demolished in 2000 and replaced with a version that lacked proper foundation and historical materials. The current construction seeks to honor the original design, incorporating historic plaques, deco tiles and the original iron gates, along with modern lighting and signage.
The city is currently hiring for several aquatic center positions, including pool director, assistant pool director, water safety instructor and lifeguards. Job listings and descriptions are available at cityofnewburgh-ny.gov/jobs.aspx.
