A morning of multigeneration fun!

Pre-k students ‘Adopt a Grandparent’

Last Thursday, and then again this past Thursday, HF-FMCSD pre-kindergartners joined with local senior citizens for something of an ‘Adopt a Grandparent’ event.

On October 17, students from Alli Lennon’s class, along with parent volunteers, walked from the Highland Falls Intermediate School to the Highland Falls Senior Center for several hours of fun and learning.

The young students did a craft – painting and putting glitter on cute Halloween cats – with over a dozen seniors, enjoyed the lunches they brought from home (with assistance in opening pesky juice box straws from volunteers!), spent some time coloring (those senior ladies are good with the crayons!), and then explored the Donna Donaldson Sensory Garden, located behind the Senior Center. It was a perfect early afternoon for them to play in the sunshine, while the seniors pushed them on the swing, helped the children with a few gardening tasks, played with trucks, pointed out Halloween decorations and more.

Lennon and Highlanders Senior Citizens Club President Kathy Jones said they hope to have more multi-generational activities as the school year progresses – up next maybe a Christmas carol sing-a-long. “As long as they’ll have us, we’re happy to visit,” Lennon said.
