The Newburgh Free Academy wrestling team is coming off what may have been the best season in program history.

The Goldbacks crowned two state champions, two additional all-state wrestlers and top finishes at both the Section 9 and New York State level.

Many of those athletes are coming back, as Will Parks takes over the program from longtime coach Chris Leggett, who was not reappointed as coach by the Newburgh Enlarged School District Board of Education.
Parks has served as Leggett’s assistant for the past eight season.

The Goldbacks, who finished third in Section 9 and fourth in the state last year have lost only one key athlete off last year’s team, Ivan Duran, who placed fifth at the Section 9 championships.

Returning is two-time state champion Cooper Merli, who, despite technically being in his junior year, plans to graduate this year and has committed to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He’ll be seeking his third state championship.

Will Soto, who won his first state championship last season, will look to become Newburgh’s second repeat state champion and is expected to win his 100th career match during his first match of the season.

Also returning are all-state wrestlers Matthew Mercado and Christopher Leggett, along with state qualifier Jordan Busby, who, as a senior, also will be working toward earning his 100th career victory.

“It’s a testament to the hard work, dedication and talent of our athletes and the support from our coaching staff, parents and community,” Parks said.

New to the team this year will be eighth grader Weston Kubin. The Goldbacks will also expect significant improvement from returning starters Mateo Morell and Billy Coughlin.

The Goldbacks will enter this season, looking to build on last year’s success and look to qualify for the New York State Duals championship, on Jan. 27 at the SRC Arena and Events Center Syracuse.

“While we’re proud of what we achieved, our focus remains on growth, discipline and teamwork,” Parks said. “We want to ensure every wrestler on the team continues to develop, both on and off the matt. We’re excited for the challenges and opportunities ahead.”
