Wallkill’s Rocco Futia gets his 100th win

Posted

When Rocco Futia wrote down his goals at the beginning of the 2022-23 wrestling season, the biggest one was to reach the 100-win plateau.

He needed 36 when the season started, and he got his 36th win of the year and 100th of his varsity career on Saturday morning when he scored a technical fall over Cornwall’s Xavier Clavell at 126 pounds during the Panthers’ third match of the Wallkill Duals at Wallkill High School.

“I was really excited that it happened here,” Futia said. “It was going to be here, or it was going to be next week in Newburgh, but I’m really excited that it happened here. My friends came and watched it, a bunch of my family was here. It was nice.”

It was one of the highlights of the Panthers’ match against Cornwall, as it was the only one the team lost, finishing second at the dual meet tournament with a 4-1 record.

Cornwall won the tournament with a 5-0 record.

The third-round dual meet was interrupted for mere minutes as Futia’s win was announced and he took pictures with some friends and family. His mother decorated the wall beside Mat 1, the Panthers’ home for the entirety of the tournament.

“My mom is always going extra with stuff like that and I appreciate it a lot,” Futia said. “My family and friends do a lot for me and I really appreciate it.”

Futia won all five of his matches Saturday. He opened the day with a forfeit win in the Panthers’ 42-30 win over Brewster, and he pinned Jackson Miceli at 118 pounds in their 42-21 win over Warwick.

After beating Clavell in the Panthers’ 36-31 loss to the Dragons, he pinned Aaron Weinbach at 118 pounds in their 71-3 win over Mamaroneck. He finished the day for the Panthers at 126 pounds with a pinfall victory over Justin Noboa in a 39-30 win over Middletown.

He is optimistic for the rest of the way.

“I’m hard training this year, going for the section title and podium at states,” Futia said.

His brother Marco Futia also had five wins for the Panthers. Viktor Banda, Matt Rizzo and Marco Martini had four wins each.
