Valentino breaks school record at Duke relays

Domenic Valentino didn’t win the race on the track, but he won the race with history.

Valentino finished second in the boys’ 1,600-meter run about nine seconds behind Tri-Valley’s Adam Furman, but his second-place finish at Friday’s Iron Duke Relays, broke a 50-year-old record.

It was also his birthday.

Valentino finished the race in 4:31.47 and broke the record set by John Neilson in 1972 when he ran in the event in 4:32.

For Valentino, who was honored Friday night as one of the Marlboro boys’ teams 12 seniors, it was a record he had been chasing since he was a freshman. When he crossed the finish line in record time, Marlboro coach Pete Carofano ran down the side of the track and gave him a large embrace.

“I didn’t even see him coming,” Valentino said. “I think he was more excited about it than I was. I was still trying to catch my breath.”

Catch his breath because in the process of trying to chase history, he was also chasing Furman, who won the race with a time of 4:23.77. Furman led the race the entire time. Valentino started in third behind Tri-Valley’s Craig Costa but was solidly in second after the second lap.

“I’m glad (Furman) was here,” Valentino said. “He really took the pace out good. Even though I didn’t catch him, he helped my pace.”

By the third lap, he had a feeling he could get the record, which he did just barely in front of his home crowd.

“It feels so special to have done it here in front of our home crowd,” Valentino said.

Valentino did get a win on the track on Friday. He ran the third leg of the Iron Dukes’ 1,600-meter relay. He took the baton from Chinedu Okasi and handed it to Dylan Gunsett, who finished the victory.

Jose Iraola-Ceely won the hammer throw reaching 135-11 and Drew Heimink won the long jump with a reach of 20-01.

Juliana Juras was a double-winner for the Marlboro girls’ team winning both the discus and the shot put, with throws of 97-6 and 26-9 respectively.

Matthew Petty had the best finish for the Highland boys’ team, taking second in the boys’ triple jump. Margaret Petty had the best finishes for the Highland girls’ teams with fourth-place finishes in the 100-meter dash and the long jump.
