Ulster Exec. launches bid for Congress

Ulster County Executive Pat Ryan has officially launched his Congressional campaign. The announcement was made on social media on Tuesday.

“I am announcing today that I will be running in the newly-created NY-18 Congressional District,” Ryan Tweeted. “As currently drawn, this map represents the area where I was born and raised, where I graduated from West Point, and where I currently live, serve as Ulster County Executive and am raising my two young sons with my wife Rebecca. In the coming days, I will be announcing more about my campaign and the steps that we will take to ensure that we can hold this seat, fight back against Washington extremism, and restore trust and faith in our democracy.”

Ryan was weighing a run in the 19th Congressional District, where a vacancy would be created by the resignation of Congressman Antonio Delgado (D-Rhinebeck), but, on Monday, court-appointed special master Jonathan Cervas announced the proposed congressional boundaries for New York State that would split Ulster. Ryan would be in the 18th district and would face off against Assemblyman Colin Schmitt (R-C- New Windsor). State Senator James Skoufis (D-Woodury) has also hinted a run for Congress after his senate district lines were redrawn, pitting him against fellow incumbent Mike Martucci (R-New Hampton).

Meanwhile, Ulster County Comptroller March Gallagher has announced that she would like to succeed Ryan as the Ulster County Executive, should he move to Washington.
