Race for Ulster County Clerk is on

Last Sunday, at a press conference at the Muse in Rosendale, Democrat Alexandria Wojcik officially kicked off her run for Ulster County Clerk. In a recent letter sent to local media outlets, Wojcik succinctly summed up the importance of the position; “The Office of the Clerk is a gateway for constituent interaction and education about government and community services.” She is currently serving as the Deputy Mayor of New Paltz.

At the press conference Wojcik highlighted a number of promises of what she would like to institute if elected. She said she has a proven track record of advocating to have government work for everyone.

Wojcik said, “Some believe that this position is a routine role with not much room for vision, let alone verve and that is why I am running...to make our Hudson Valley the gold standard for constituent services on how we help people by meeting them where they are at. There is so much potential in this office that we have yet to ever see and is first and foremost a service provider.”

Wojcik said the county clerk’s office should be educating immigrants on their rights and making the LGBT+ community feel safe in this time of uncertainty.

Wojcik said she has been told that her run for Ulster County Clerk is “political suicide” and, “I’ve been told to wait my turn, but I am not waiting my turn because the people have been waiting long enough for what I have to offer.”

Wojcik put forth a number of promises; if elected she would expand mobile DMV hours and locations, consider a four-day work week, would always consult with union employees, hold office hours in every municipality to foster better communication between local and county clerks positions; work closely with Veterans organizations and with the Office of the Aging. She also promised to initiate an Annual Report from the Office of the County Clerk to inform the public on activities they have been doing throughout the year.

Wojcik promised to ensure the public had more access to information, which she believes is the cornerstone of democracy.

Wojcik said the Ulster County Clerk is an elected position for a reason.

“It’s not an appointed name, it’s not civil service thing, it’s a four year position so the voters have a choice about who will be the face of the office that is the gateway for all the things they need to survive and to thrive in our county. I have the experience and a great love for our community to get this office off the ground on day one and to ensure all these positive strides under my leadership. I’m really excited to do this for all of you and for our county.”

Wojcik will be participating in the Democratic Primary and in order to vote in that primary, people should register by February 14.

In coming issues, the Southern Ulster Times will interview additional candidates running for Ulster County Clerk.
