Matthew Darling named Principal of Highland Elementary School

Posted

Highland Elementary School’s new principal is no stranger to the Husky community. Matthew Darling, who has served as the building’s assistant principal since 2020, was promoted this past summer when former principal Joel Freer was named superintendent of the Highland Central School District.

Darling came to Highland from the Newburgh Enlarged City School District, where he was a Grade 5 teacher for six years. He graduated from Mount Saint Mary College, earning degrees in both Childhood Education and Special Education. He was also a valued member of the college’s soccer team, playing as a goalie for four years. He later received his School Leadership degree from SUNY New Paltz.

Darling, who lives in Highland with his wife and young son, is excited to be transitioning to this new role from his previous position.

“Since I started in Highland two years ago, the faculty, staff, and families have been extremely welcoming and supportive,” he said. “I am looking forward to collaborating with everyone again this year to make Highland Elementary School the best it can be for our students.”
