Marlboro tops FDR in double OT

The September 26 matchup between the Marlboro Iron Dukes and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidents featured three overtime touchdowns and a dozen more points than what was scored in regulation. The Dukes’ opening drive ate half of the first quarter, as Jack Buzzurro bulldozed into his first of two rushing touchdowns. He finished with 111 yards in the 19-12 double overtime victory for Marlboro.

The Dukes clung to the 6-0 lead for all but 88 seconds. F.D.R.’s late game equalizer and missed extra point gave Marlboro the ball with 1:27 to work with in regulation. A turnover gave it back at their own 30. The Duke defense stepped to the challenge in the final minute, forcing too-long passes, a pair of incompletions, and a turnover on downs in less than a minute.

Nate Armstrong locked up F.D.R. with 12 tackles. Giorgi Partsvania had his second consecutive performance with 10. Shawn DeLaigle performed on both sides, with seven tackles, 44 all-purpose yards, and a passing touchdown.

DeLaigle and Dylan McKenzie connected for a touchdown in the first overtime, matched by another F.D.R. desperation drive. Buzzurro’s second rushing touchdown was a five-yard run worth a mile to the Marlboro defense, which made one more massive stand to secure the win.
