A last week’s Marlboro school board meeting, Myra Rivera, Coordinator of the Reflections Program, presented awards to their local 2021 winners.

Reflections is an arts recognition and achievement program that provides opportunities for students to express themselves creatively and to receive positive recognition for original works of art inspired by a pre-selected theme that increases community awareness of the importance of the arts in education. This year’s theme was “I Will Change the World By…”

Sarah Masterson was the winner in the Photography category for her selection “Earth’s Will” photograph. She took a picture of a vibrant lavender crocus that she feels is an example of, “how beautiful the world really is. We humans are polluting our own home and are the cause for Earth’s hurting. Humanity needs to realize how wonderful she is in order to abandon this cruelty...This living beauty is being threatened by our everlasting carelessness.”

Tenth grader Lex Antonelli was the second winner in the photography category for his sunrise submission, “New Beginnings.”

“We face so many challenges and disappointments every single day,” he wrote, “We cannot let that tear us down. We must remember we get a second chance, another opportunity to find happiness and do good. It comes to us every day in the form of a sunrise.”

Ninth grader Jacqueline Rivera was honored in the Visual Arts category with her drawing, “The Shades That Make Us Human,” which depicts the “many shades of human skin tones and diversity that exist in the world. Discrimination due to skin color is a huge issue and needs to come to an end. We are all humans and deserve to be treated equally and respectfully, regardless of skin color.”

All three students will now move on to the Taconic Regional Reflections Competition.

Superintendent Michael Brooks thanked Myra Rivera and High School Principal Ryan Lawler and, “Lex, Sarah and Jacqueline, congratulations, well done.”
