John Ross Whitney, 89, of New Paltz, NY passed suddenly on December 24th. John was born on October 8th 1935 to Charles E. and Edna M. Whitney of Montgomery. He was predeceased by his four siblings Flora Shafer, Charles “Pete” Whitney, Dorothy McMahon, and his twin sister Joan Whitney.
John was a life-long sportsman who loved hunting, fishing, hiking, and spending time in the woods. He and his wife Mary frequently enjoyed the pleasure of a day trip or picnic in the Catskill mountains. As a member of the Wawarsing Rod and Gun Club, he supported numerous shooting competitions and the annual children’s fishing derby. He was an active member of New Hurley Reformed Church, where he once served as a deacon. Prior to his retirement John was known by many as the yard coordinator at Wickes Lumber in Walden. John was a humble, hard-working, independent individual who enjoyed Civil War history, had a positive demeanor, a hearty laugh, and a gift for storytelling. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
John is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Mary, three children, Brenda Miller of Walden, Bonnie Gingras of Montgomery, and David Whitney of Westminster, CA, four stepchildren Pam Sarine Baker, John Sarine, Jeff Sarine and Steve Sarine, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
