Javad Marhamati, MD of Maybrook, passed away, August 15, 2023. He was born June 23, 1935 to Gholam Hosein and Fatemeh Zaynab Marhamati in Tehran, Iran.
Javad grew up in a large, active household in Iran among 12 siblings who admired him. He was a natural family man and was instrumental in helping many of his family members get a higher education and achieve success. He, himself, became a caring doctor, affectionately known as Dr. Jay to his patients.
He attended undergraduate and medical school in Tehran, where he later became Professor of Surgery at the University of Tehran. He pursued his specialization in surgery in the U.S. where he met his wife of 55 years, Eleanor, with whom he had a happy and loving family. He was a skilled surgeon, loved by his patients, providing free care to those in need, in keeping with his philanthropic nature. He was full of energy and had a zest for life that was unmistakable. His exuberance was always on display at the tennis courts where he jumped over the net after each match. He loved spending time with his family and friends who often consulted him for his wise advice and reassuring pep talks. He was an avid card player, loving his time at the Middletown Elks Lodge with his friends, where he was a member for over 30 years.
A Persian poetry enthusiast, he shared readings at monthly shab-a-shers (Persian poetry nights) for decades. During his many winters in Florida, he enjoyed riding his bike to the beach for daily walks. He was a world traveler, even adventuring to the Great Wall of China well into his 80s. He lived life to the fullest and had no regrets to the end of his life. He will be deeply missed by his family and all of those who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his wife Eleanor, son Darius and his partner Abby, daughter Sheila and her husband James, grandchildren Leila, Juliet, Rowan, Kai and Jonah, brothers Reza, Amir and Nasser, sister Sharife, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by nine siblings.
Burial was Friday, August 18 in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Montgomery, NY.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the Middletown Elks Lodge and CARE.
