Highland’s Dean Klotz scores 100th goal in win at Pine Bush

It was a week of milestones for the Highland boys’ lacrosse team.

When Dean Klotz found the back of the cage with 7:52 remaining in the Highland boys’ lacrosse team’s 11-6 win over the Pine Bush Bushmen, he became the latest Husky to score 100 varsity goals over the course of his career.

“It feels good,” Klotz said. “I know there’s a lot of great lacrosse players that just came from the program and just to be among them felt great,” Klotz said.

About three days later, in the Huskies’ 9-8 loss to the Minisink Valley Warriors, attackman A.J. Palmer scored his 100th point to take his place among the Huskies’ elite scorers.

Klotz finished Wednesday’s game with three goals and made four assists.

“He means so much to the program,” Highland coach Tom Schlappich said. “He’s just an ambassador for the program. The little kids in the youth program look up to him, and he’s just been a fabulous player throughout the years.”

Despite the victory, it was a tough day on a cold Wednesday afternoon at Pine Bush Elementary School and coming off the previous day’s 11-10 loss to Nanuet, the Huskies entered the game flat and fell behind to the Bushmen, 2-1, in the first quarter.

Klotz had four goals and an assist in the loss to Nanuet, which left him entering Wednesday’s game with two to go before reaching 100.

Although he said he didn’t know it was coming but was happy to take his place among the Huskies’ elite.

“It’s amazing,” he said. “They’ve all been good lacrosse players who helped us win section championships in the past. It’s good to be out there with them.”

But it was attackman A.J. Palmer, who turned the tide for the Huskies on Wednesday as he tied the game as time expired on the first quarter.

“I called a timeout after they scored the second goal and I said, ‘come on, guys, this is not the way we play. We need to figure it out here’ and I think they did, and then with our second goal at the buzzer, it was a new game.”

The Huskies jumped in front on another goal by Palmer early in the second quarter, and Osei Adoma added two straight to give the Huskies 5-2 lead. If the Huskies were flat in the first quarter, it was Palmer’s buzzer-beating goal that propelled them forward for the rest of the game.

“It gave us momentum,” Klotz said. “We were flat coming out and I think we were lacking momentum, and I think that really helped us.”

Pine Bush’s Colin Carey scored the Bushmen’s lone goal in the second quarter, cutting the Huskies’ lead to 5-3 at halftime. The Huskies outscored the Bushmen, 6-3 in the second half.

Palmer led with five goals, Adoma had two. Logan Zehr scored a goal and Aden Wiser had an assist.

Landon Zehr made 11 saves.

Alec Gorman led the Bushmen with three goals and Terence Coleman had a goal and an assist. Colin Carey and Danny DeGroodt had a goal each. Joseph Darrell and Dion Cauthen each had an assist.

Tyler Ostrom made 10 saves.

“This was a sloppy game,” Schlappich said. “It wasn’t a good one. We were coming off a very well-played game yesterday, which we came on the short side, but it was very well played.”

Palmer scored four goals and had an assist in the game against Nanuet. Adoma had a goal and Shaun Piegari had a goal. Frankie Guidi, Matt Castellani and Logan Zehr had a goal each. Landon Zehr made 16 saves.

The Huskies had two days off before finishing the week on Saturday with a 9-8 home loss against the Minisink Valley Warriors.

With the game tied at eight, Minisink Valley’s Ben Salaman broke the tie on a fast break with 21 seconds left in the fourth quarter. He finished with four goals. Zak McKernan had two goals, while Nick Redmond had a goal and two assists. Buddy Francis and Andrews Zazarcyk had a goal each.

Nick Kennedy had an assist, and Jackson Chadwick made 12 saves.

Klotz scored three goals and had three assists, while Palmer had three goals. Guidi and Adoma each had a goal. Mike Murphy made an assist and Landon Zehr had 18 saves.

“We have some very big games coming up,” Schlappich said. “The very difficult part of our schedule. Minisink is very tough, and I think we have a good stretch of league games.”
