Highland school trustee receives Excellence Award

Posted

Susan Gilmore recently received an Excellence Award from the Mid-Hudson School Study Council [MHSSC] for her service on the Highland School Board. She has been a member of the board since 2009.

Gilmore was nominated by former Highland Superintendent Thomas Bongiovi. In his nominating letter, he wrote that, “Sue’s energy, passion for students, attention to detail and her fiscal responsibility to the taxpayers makes her an obvious choice for this award. Her dedication to board service is truly inspiring as she is continually advocating for children and improved educational services for all.”

Roberta Greene, Executive Director of the MHSSC, congratulated Gilmore and noted that, “an awards committee selected you from among the nominees submitted by school districts and BOCES in seven counties comprising the Mid-Hudson region.” Due to the pandemic the usual dinner to honor those chosen will not be held but Gilmore will receive a commemorative medal and certificate for her service, “and we thank you for your work on behalf of Hudson Valley students, schools and committees.”

Upon learning of the award, Gilmore said, “I am so appreciative and deeply, deeply moved by this. It was very, very nice.”

Gilmore believes her award was mentioned in the MHSSC newsletter at the beginning of the 2021-22 school year but only learned about it from fellow board member, Heather Welch, who surprised her with a congratulatory email notifying her of the award.

Gilmore said Highland is blessed with a very competent Board of Education.

“We work well together and the administrative team is excellent. I feel so fortunate to work with such a group of dedicated individuals,” she said.
