The Highland girls’ lacrosse team finished its home schedule last Wednesday night with an 11-7 non-league victory over the Beacon Bulldogs at Highland High School.

After the game, the Huskies honored their seniors: Bridgette Carle, Camryn Moschitta, and Zaynah Suleiman.

However, it was the underclassmen that carried the night for the Huskies as junior Joann Williams led the way with five goals and one assist, and sophomore Jessica Rendon scored three goals.

The Huskies and Bulldogs each traded a pair of goals to start the game, but Williams put them ahead for good, breaking the 2-2 tie with 15:18 to go in the first half. Seconds later, Leah Klotz scored to restore the Huskies’ two-goal lead. Rendon scored her first goal of the game with 13:26 left in the half to give the Huskies a 5-2 lead, their largest of the game.

After another score by the Bulldogs, the Huskies scored three straight goals to open a five-goal lead, the largest they would hold.

The Bulldogs closed the gap to three goals by Gabriela Del Castillo with 25.8 remaining in the first half, but Williams restored the four-goal lead almost immediately when she connected with the back of the cage just 46 seconds into the second half.

The Huskies would open a six-goal lead after a core by Klotz with 7:57 to go in the game but would never lead by less than four.

The Bulldogs appeared to cut the Huskies’ lead to four goals when Victoria Albra scored what appeared to be the Bulldogs’ eighth goal, but DelCastillo was whistled for a penalty and the goal was disallowed.

The team’s seniors were recognized under the pavilion adjacent to the field after the game.
The Huskies opened the week with a 9-4 win over Burke Catholic. They were scheduled to finish the regular season on Tuesday at Newburgh Free Academy.
