Edward H. Roemer of Bloomingburg, died Wednesday, August 2, 2023, in Middletown. He was 90.
The son of the late Frederick C. and Dorothy J. Roemer, he was born January 17, 1933 in New Windsor. The family later moved to Long Island N.Y., where he graduated from Freeport High School. After attending the University of Delaware from 1950 to 1952, he entered the Naval Flight School at Pensacola, Florida. Upon being commissioned in the United States Marine Corps and being designated a Naval Aviator, Mr. Roemer served in Korea and Japan with Marine Fighter Squadrons VMF 115 and VMF 513.
In 1956, he became an active member of the Marine Corps reserve, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
In 1956-57 he again attended the University of Delaware where he met his wife of 65 years, Diane Chalmers.
In 1958, Ed and Diane relocated to Long Island where he started his career at Grumman Corp in Bethpage L.I. as a Test Engineer. He transferred to System Engineering in 1963 and in the following year was assigned to the program management staff of the C-2A Greyhound Program, a position he held until 1967. In 1968-1969, Mr. Roemer specialized in the study of business systems in Grumman’s Professional Development Program, and in 1970 he was assigned to Contract Management in Ground Transport Programs.
In the spring of 1973, the Grumman Corporation entered into a joint venture with Zentralgesellschaft VFW-Fokker mbH of Dusseldorf, West Germany, and formed Grumman Avio Systems Corportation to work directly with the German corporation’s subsidiary, Fokker VFW of Schiphol-Oost, the Netherlands, in the manufacturer of passenger loading bridges and other products for airport terminals. Mr. Roemer was selected to assist in opening the new plant in Grand Prairie, Texas, in April of 1973. A year later, on April 2, 1974, the Board of Directors of Grumman Avio Systems Corporation elected Mr. Roemer as Vice President.
Subsequent to the decision to close Grumman Avio Systems Corporation, Mr. Roemer returned to Grumman Aerospace Corporation as Contract Manager - Foreign Sales, Manager – Business Analysis, Deputy Director - Business Management and Analysis, and Business Manager - Advanced Programs.
Ed enjoyed gardening, woodworking (he could build anything), painting, a tasty Seagrams-7 Manhattan and was an avid history buff.
Survivors include his wife Diane, daughter Katherine A. Roemer of Bloomingburg, daughter Susan R. Reilly and her husband Tom of Fenwick Island, DE, daughter Lynda R. Stoegbauer and her husband Scott of Bloomingburg, son Jon Roemer and his wife Alison of New Hope, PA, daughter Dorothy Ferrity and her husband Tucker of Farmingdale, NY, nine grandchildren, one great grandchild and six nieces and nephews
He was predeceased by his two brothers, Frederick D. and Robert L. Roemer.
