Community Fishing Day draws a crowd to Milton’s Cluett Schantz Park

The first Saturday of autumn offered perfect conditions for casting a line, and dozens of families took advantage during Community Fishing Day at Cluett Schantz Memorial Park.

The Marlboro-Milton Lions Club, the state Department of Environmental Conservation and the Town of Marlboro Recreation Committee hosted the free event Sept. 27 at the park, 1801-1805 Rt. 9W.

The day featured catch-and-release fishing, with participants bringing their own rods and tackle. A state fishing license was not required. Experts were on hand to share fishing techniques, information on native species, rules and regulations, and the importance of environmental protection and conservation.

Joe Micelli, first vice president of the Lions Club and a police officer with the state DEC, estimated that 60 children and at least as many adults attended.

“At least three families who had never fished before are here,” Micelli said.

To prepare, the pond at Cluett Schantz Park was stocked with 190 fish — 140 largemouth bass and 150 bluegill.

Micelli said the event continues to grow and is becoming a community favorite.

“It seems to be one of the most popular events of the year,” he said.

Saturday was also one of New York’s designated free fishing days, when no license is required. The next one will be held on Veterans Day.
