Driver got out of the car in time

On Saturday, November 27 just past 9 p.m., a 2019 Honda driven by Mark Delacorte, of Kingston, got stuck on the railroad tracks in Marlboro, near the boatyard, and was hit and destroyed by a northbound CSX train.

Police Chief Gerald Cocozza said, “A patron of the Falcon had dinner and enjoyed the show and decided when he was leaving to go check out the river. Being unfamiliar with the area, he cut the intersection too short and got hung up on the rails and he blew a tire and couldn’t get off the rails.”

Delacorte noticed that a northbound train was coming, got out of his car and tried to signal it, “but obviously they couldn’t stop and smashed into his car.”

Cocozza said they interviewed the driver, “and checked for intoxication, which was negative. We verified his story and interviewed the train conductor, Rosanne Thorn, and train operator William Rositzke, and all the stories matched up. Basically, they noticed the car but there was no way they could stop. They applied the brakes and smashed into the car and went 3/4 of a mile up the tracks before stopping. The engineer walked back and met the driver and then called the cops.”

The Marlboro Fire Department arrived on the scene and disconnected the battery and made the car safe. Mobile Life responded and checked everyone out. There were no injuries as Delacorte was not in the car at the time of the accident. In addition, CSX Police and CSX administrators were also at the scene of the accident and eventually CSC Auto of Milton towed the car away.
