Black History Month: dignity and respect for all

Posted

As we celebrate Black History Month, it is important to acknowledge and honor the legacy of African Americans who have made significant contributions to our society. One such way is through proper burial and preservation of the remains of African Americans, who have long been denied dignity and respect in death.

The Montgomery Town Board has taken a major step in the right direction by approving a conceptual design for the revitalization of a historic African American Cemetery. This cemetery, located along Route 416 across the street from the Medline Industries facility, was established in the 18th century for slaves and used by African Americans through the 19th century.

With 171 known grave markers and a rich cultural heritage, it is imperative that we preserve and commemorate this cemetery for future generations to learn from.

The conceptual design, developed by BCT Design Group and sculptor Vinnie Bagwell, is a testament to the power of art to educate and bring people together. Bagwell, a self-taught artist and social activist, has created numerous public art pieces that celebrate African American culture and history. One of her contributions, a nine foot tall bronze sculpture of an African American woman holding a staff, is a symbol of strength and resilience that will welcome visitors to the cemetery.

As we look towards the future, it is crucial that we work together to revitalize this cemetery and ensure its proper preservation. The Town of Montgomery will collaborate with the State Historic Preservation Office and local property owners to secure easements and make this project a reality. The end result will be a place where people of all backgrounds can come together to learn about our shared history and embrace our differences.

The revitalization of this historic African American Cemetery is a step towards acknowledging the past, educating future generations and promoting unity. As we celebrate Black History Month, let us also take this opportunity to remember the countless African Americans who have been denied a proper burial and work towards providing them the dignity and respect they deserve.
