Stab victim charged with attempted murder

On January 8,  at approximately 7:28 a.m, the City of Newburgh Police Department responded to 56 Van Ness Street for report of an assault in progress. Officers arriving on scene located a 50-year old female victim who was struck in the head with the butt of a folding knife and a 47-year-old male victim who had been stabbed in the hand and arm.

Officers were informed that the male-perpetrator was still inside the building, and was also suffering from stab wounds that were sustained during the physical altercation.

The perpetrator, identified as 54-year old Charles McLean was located at the top of the staircase holding a knife threatening officers not to come near him or he would kill them.

A standoff ensued and following approximately three hours of hostage negotiations, McLean was placed in-custody without further incident. McLean was transported to Montefiore St. Lukes Hospital to be treated for stab wounds he received to his upper body and discharged. McLean was arrested and charged with Attempted Murder 2nd and Assault 2nd; with additional charges pending. The 47-year old male-victim was transported to Montefiore St. Lukes Hospital and treated for his stab wounds/lacerations and released.

The 50-year old female-victim sustained substantial pain and swelling to her forehead and was treated at the scene.
