Ramos announces re-election bid

Orange County Legislator Genesis Ramos will seek re-election for a second term in the 2025 election, and looks to continue representing the City of Newburgh and Town of Newburgh. Ramos will now be running in District 4 this coming fall due to redistricting conducted in Orange County. Ramos held a kickoff event at El Tecuan Snack Bar on January 26 joined by her family, friends and elected colleagues.

A City of Newburgh native and first generation Honduran-American, Ramos became the youngest member ever elected to the county legislature when she declared victory in her race. She is recognized as the first woman of color elected to the legislature and is one of several Democrats who make up the minority caucus.

As a first-time incumbent, Ramos feels good about her re-election campaign.

“I feel that I have been able to make significant inroads and progress in different ways, and I have been able to build strong relationships with some of my colleagues across the aisle in the county legislature and work on some bipartisan initiatives and also maintain and establish relationships with elected officials at all levels of government, whether it’s been our local elected officials here in the City of Newburgh or Town of Newburgh as well as our state and federal partners,” said Ramos.

Over the past three years, Ramos personally feels she has grown while serving in the role, proud of the relationships she has built within the county while supporting resolutions and initiatives presented. She is also proud of her upheld commitment and representation of her community. As a legislator, Ramos has learned more about her community and about the systems of the county whether that be through meeting with various department heads and county workers or touring county facilities and offices. During her time, Ramos is proud of delivering $10,000 in municipal grants to the City of Newburgh while also holding leaders in the county accountable and standing up for residents.

Last year, Ramos reflected on her support for county workers seeking a fair contract which was signed and ratified days later after a public hearing on the matter. Ramos is also a strong advocate for housing which she recognizes as a crisis both in Orange County and nationally and is proud of the bipartisan work and energy when it comes to addressing housing. While Ramos recognizes the county’s strong economic development initiatives, she is concerned on the emphasis of warehouse development, which impacts the overall topic of housing.

Ramos currently serves as chair of the Human Services Committee, which she is truly honored to have been appointed to in her first term. In her first few weeks, Ramos has met with the Department of Social Services offices, Office for the Aging, offices for veteran services and offices of employment and training services and looks forward to working with them in service of the county’s residents.

Ramos’s priorities now heading into the election include the following for voters to consider: pushing for housing solutions and policies at the county level; advocating and supporting initiatives on county transportation such as upgrading routes or expanding hours; supporting education through local institutions such as SUNY Orange and county employment and training opportunities; supporting a strong budget with the ability to increase county program funding; maintaining taxes for county residents; ensuring the health and well-being of residents such as through green spaces and parks; remaining committed to bipartisanship at the local level and holding accountability in county government.

“From the moment I launched my campaign four years ago to this moment where I have decided to announce my reelection, I have been committed to showing up, being present, being an advocate on many issues, establishing, building and maintaining relationships with elected officials at all levels of government, community leaders just different constituent groups to ensure that I am governing in a collaborative way, governing in a way that is truly representative of the constituents that I represent, and I have tried to, especially through bipartisan efforts and initiatives, to ensure that I am representing everyone in in my district,” said Ramos. “Overall, I am just again committed to being an advocate, a partner, and to continue to ensure that our community is getting the best representation and the representation that it is deserving of. I really look forward to hopefully being able to represent our community for another term.”
