NFA’s Rodriguez named first team All Star

Newburgh Free Academy senior Javier Rodriguez racked up another honor in his last season in a Goldbacks uniform.

Rodriguez, who helped guide the Goldbacks to a berth in the Section 9 Class AA championship game, where they fell to the Warwick Wildcats, was named to the New York State first team for large schools (Class AA and A) by the state’s soccer coaches.

Rodriguez, who finished the season with 21 goals and five assists in his senior campaign, finished his career with 70 goals and 18 assists.

He scored the only goal in the Goldbacks’ 1-0 win over the Monroe-Woodbury Crusaders in the Section 9 Class AA finals to get the Goldbacks to the championship game.

He was also named to the Section 9 All-Section team and was named an All-American last summer.

When he was named an All-American last summer, Newburgh coach Matt Iorlano called him “one of the most talented players I’ve ever coached.”

His speed alone, is unmatched, by anyone else on the field. Once he gets the ball in the open field, no one can keep up with him.

“He runs faster with the ball than most people run without it,” Iorlano said.

He is also a skilled technician with the ball, making subtle touches when needed and makes quick movements to get away from defenders and put himself in position to score.

He is the engine that drives the Goldbacks’ offense.

“Our center midfielder’s jobs were to get the ball to him,” Iorlano said. “You know the way he goes is the way we go. And then you get the problem of teams double-teaming him and you need someone else to put the ball in the net and sometimes that didn’t happen.”

Senior Fredy Rios also was named to the section Class AA all-star team.
