Greetings from River City. The decision on Roe is a cause of joy for some and a cause of alarm for others. Abortion is not at all ended, but there are people and organizations who will help (without passing judgement) the pregnant girl or woman who may be feeling desperate or hopeless.  I hope and pray that they will choose help instead of death.

On June 16, the City of Newburgh, Newburgh Free Library, the Small Business Development Center (“SBDC”), and the Orange County Chamber of Commerce, celebrated the graduation of the Spring, 2022 Small Business Bootcamp attendees during an outdoor ceremony in front of Newburgh Free Library.

Perfect Sweets and the Silk Factory, two small businesses located in the City of Newburgh, were present for the ceremony and provided graduates and guests with treats and beverages.

City of Newburgh Councilman Anthony Grice, who spoke to the graduates during the ceremony notes “As the grandson, son, brother, and husband to small business owners, I understand the passion and struggles that small business owners have for their business. That is part of why I am a proud supporter of this opportunity, the Small Business Association, the Orange County Chamber of Commerce, and other groups that are available to help small businesses.”
The next City of Newburgh Small Business Bootcamp is planned for the Fall, 2022.  For program inquiries, contact Alexandra Church, City of Newburgh Director of Planning and Development, or Ellen Fillo, City of Newburgh Director of Community Development.

Mount Saint Mary College’s Dominican Scholars of Hope recently donated $300 to the Baby Steps Baby Pantry at Christ Lutheran Church in Newburgh. Rooted in the values of the Judeo-Christian and Dominican heritage of the college, the Dominican Scholars of Hope (DSH) is a nonacademic living and learning community for highly motivated Mount students.

Through a Krispy Kreme donut fundraiser, the DSH raised the money for the pantry, which provides infant supplies for families in need in the local area. Each month, families who are part of the program are provided with a week’s worth of diapers, wipes, wash, and cream.

The Rev. Ernst Mossl, pastor of Christ Lutheran Church, was grateful to accept the donations in person near the end of the Spring 2022 semester.  The DSH program is spearheaded by Charles Zola, assistant to the President for Mission Integration, director of the Mount’s Catholic and Dominican Institute, and associate professor of Philosophy. Happy birthday greetings to the ever exuberant Arlene Butwell who celebrates her candles and cake day on June 28.  May this birthday be filled with many happy returns, and may God bless you with a year of much happiness and much improved health, dear Arlene. Happy Birthday!

After learning Joe Butwell was in the hospital, I called Arlene who told me Joe went back into St. Luke’s for the second time in a month. Over the last month, he developed a skin condition that has caused terrible boils all over his body and limbs and his sugar dropped to a dangerous low.  St. Luke’s couldn’t find what caused the condition, so he has been transferred to a hospital in the Bronx.

Prayers are asked for Ron Albrechtsen, who has been having dialysis treatments. Ron is holding up, but the treatments take a lot out of him. He and his wife, Barbara would be grateful for your gift of prayer.

Please answer another prayer request—this for my nephew, Bill Miller, with an infection in his leg that has become dangerous and has not responded to all the treatments tried. All your prayers are most appreciated.

I offer heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Barbara Pitcher Wimmer, 62, who passed away on June 21 at just 62 years old. Beloved by all who knew her for her kind and caring ways. She will be missed by all, including Newburgh’s Meals On Wheels where she was a volunteer, and at Church on the Vine where she was a member.

From Sacred Heart-St. Francis of Assisi Churches: “The Supporters of our Little Furry Ministry comes through again! Thanks to the combined generosity of St. Mother Teresa Parish’s two churches, $1,051 in addition to another carload of pet food, pet toys, pet bedding, and cleaning supplies have been collected to help support the Hudson Valley Animal Rescue & Sanctuary.

“Fr. Bill started this ‘Little Furry Ministry’ in 2016 and because of your faithful generosity it has been a success beyond his expectations and is still going strong--ALL BECAUSE OF YOU! Your support immensely helps the HVARS in its’ efforts in helping homeless animals and rescuing hurt wild animals that get released back into their own environment once they are healed. THANK YOU SO MUCH to all the generous and faithful supporters of this Little Furry Ministry. God Bless You All.”

I am very sorry to say goodbye to Fr. Bill Damroth, Pastor of the Parish of Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta Sacred Heart Church-St. Francis of Assisi Church, who will be leaving for a new assignment in Port Jervis.

Fr. Bill was there with prayers throughout our little Jayce’s illness and passing and was always ready to help with any concerns with a comforting ear and word and prayer.

Among the things he loves are his family, baseball, movies, animals, and his parishioners. He will be much missed by the parish.

God bless all that you do, and wherever your ministry takes you, dear Fr. Bill.

As always, I close with my prayers for God’s blessings on your heads, my dears.
