A Newburgh man was sentenced to five years in state prison last week after pleading guilty to attempting to possess a loaded firearm, Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced.

Romaine Calhoun, 21, was sentenced by Orange County Court Judge Craig Stephen Brown to five years in prison followed by three years of post-release supervision. Calhoun had previously admitted to a charge of attempted criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree.

According to court documents and statements, New York State Police pulled over a vehicle on August 6, 2024, around 12:40 p.m. on South William Street in Newburgh for multiple traffic violations. Calhoun was a passenger in the vehicle. Troopers discovered neither the driver nor Calhoun had a valid license, leading to the vehicle being impounded. During an inventory search, police found a loaded .38-caliber revolver under the seat Calhoun had occupied.

At his plea hearing, Calhoun admitted to attempting to possess the firearm.

“The illegal possession of firearms goes hand-in-hand with other violent crimes perpetrated in Orange County,” Hoovler said in a statement. “My office, together with our law enforcement partners, will continue to prioritize taking illegal guns and the criminals who possess them off of our streets. I commend the proactive policing by the New York State Police that ensured this offender would be held accountable for his crimes.”

Hoovler also thanked the New York State Police for their investigation, which led to Calhoun’s arrest.

The case was prosecuted by Senior Assistant District Attorney Richard Giordano.
