Luciani seeks to fill Schmitt’s Assembly seat

Town of Woodbury Councilwoman Kathryn Luciani will seek the open seat in the 99th New York State Assembly district this coming November.

The 99th Assembly District is made up of part of both Orange and Rockland County which is currently represented by Assemblyman Colin Schmitt. Schmitt will be seeking New York’s 18th Congressional District seat that is currently held by Sean Patrick Maloney.

Luciani’s opponent for the open seat in this assembly district is Christopher Eachus, Democrat, of New Windsor who recently announced his campaign.

Originally from Rockland County, Luciani graduated from Clarkstown South High School in 1997 and continued on to Rockland Community College but made the decision to enter the workforce soon after. According to her biography, Luciani has worked as a staffing director for American Pool, worked for All-Win Office Supply and was a preschool teacher for five years.

Luciani, a Republican, serves as an active member of the Town of Woodbury Council and works as fire recruiter for the Woodbury Fire Department and as a police commissioner for the Woodbury Police Department. Luciani is also the daughter of a New York City Police officer and has a brother that went on to join the department. If she is elected, she looks to continue supporting law enforcement and first responders along with addressing the concerns and difficulties of bail reform here in New York State.

Luciani also wants to create more support for the veteran population in her community and to assist parents navigating the educational system during the on-going pandemic.

Luciani also started a family and now has five children and is the founder and president of We Are Woodbury, a Woodbury based organization that seeks improvement and revitalization in the Town of Woodbury. She also sits on the Revitalization Committee for the town.

Even before she had even considered running for her town board, Luciani shared that she would attend the town meetings to learn more about what was going on in her immediate community. Luciani ran for the board and was appointed to the board this year in January.

“I love my community. I love working with other communities,” Luciani said.

Even before politics and now as an elected official, what Luciani believes she brings to the 99th district is a representative that is on the ground with the people and active in the community. “I’m there, I volunteer, I’m on the ground, my hands are dirty, I talk to people,” Luciani said. “Community is everything. I like people feeling that they’re being heard.”

As an elected official, Luciani shared she has relationships with other elected officials in the Town of New Windsor, Cornwall, and Monroe and with their help, this support can help her address issues and push the 99th district forward. “I want people to know that we [elected officials] are voted in by them, for them,” Luciani said. “I want anybody to know that I work for them. I want to be a community voice. I want to be able to fight for my state.”

Members of the community have reached out to Luciani since her announcement to offer their support for her run and Assemblyman Schmitt offered words of encouragement and support for Luciani as she prepares for her run heading into November.

“Kate is a great leader in Woodbury. She’s authentic, she’s a mom from our community. Truly been dedicated to Orange County and the Hudson Valley for many, many years,” said Assemblyman Schmitt. “Kate Luciani has my full endorsement and support to get elected to the 99th Assembly District.”

“As a candidate for State Assembly 99th District Kathryn Luciani brings energy and excitement to the office. What impresses me most about Kate is that she is running for the right reasons. She cares and truly wants to make a difference. Kate is just what we need in Albany; a common sense community leader who will represent our Hudson Valley values,” said Jim Monaghan, Town of Stony Point Supervisor. “I have seen firsthand her helpfulness, commitment and respect for every person. She takes great pride in her service to others, always ready to lend a hand. She is a strong supporter of our law enforcement officers, our firefighters and first responders. She will put families first over dangerous criminals and fight to repeal the dangerous bail reform laws.”
