Local police agencies to observe National Night Out

Posted

The City of Newburgh, Town of New Windsor and Town of Newburgh welcomes and invites all residents and visitors alike to their respective National Night Out celebrations that are set to take place on the evening of Tuesday, August 2.

The National Night Out event, first held in August of 1984, 38 years ago, is an annual community event that fosters community and police relations and promotes community comradery. This national event allows community members and their local police departments/officers to come together in a positive atmosphere.

Community members have the opportunity to interact with their officers and learn more about what goes on in the daily life and work of police officers. Officers can also speak with residents and learn more about their needs and priorities while having a fun and interactive night. To learn more about the history and work of this event, please visit natw.org.

Details for the upcoming National Night Out celebrations for the three municipalities are provided below:

City of Newburgh

National Night Out in the city will begin at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, August 2 and will conclude at 8 p.m. This event will be held starting from the Johnston St. intersection, down the Broadway corridor and go to the Liberty St. intersection.

City police officers will be actively engaging with community members during the course of the event. Free food and entertainment along with additional community activities and resources will be provided and available for city residents.

The city’s executive office did not respond to requests for additional information.

Town of New Windsor
New Windsor’s first annual National Night Out will kick off at 5 p.m. and end at 8 p.m. and will take place at Kristi Babcock Park, located at 660 Mount Airy Road.

Though the event is mainly centered around the support and camaraderie between the police department and community, Councilwoman Eve Lincoln and Town Supervisor George Meyers shared that the event will also feature appearances from the New Windsor Emergency Medical Services and varying town fire departments. Lincoln also serves as one of the co-chairs for this event.

“My goal when I took office was to build a stronger sense of community in our town,” said Lincoln. “Starting an annual National Night Out is a great way to do this and I’m so excited to be a part of its inaugural year.”

According to Police Chief Robert Doss, the event will feature NWPD vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles and department canines, a LifeNet of New York Medical Helicopter, a New York State Police [NYSP] armored vehicle, an NYSP Mounted Trooper on horseback, a DJ and free t-shirts for town kids. Also at the event will be various information tables set up with employees from the Orange County Department of Health, Fearless!, Hope Not Handcuffs, and the Mental Health Association of Orange County. In addition there will be two Trek brand kids bicycles, donated by Verla International raffled off during the course of the evening. Verla International is currently based in New Windsor.
“This is a night for our law enforcement and other first responders to stand together with their residents and promote awareness, safety, and neighborhood unity,” Doss said. “We have a great night planned that will bring the community and police together under positive circumstances. I look forward to seeing the camaraderie in our town grow.”
