Kantra Lounge opens on Liberty Street

Kantra Lounge, Newburgh’s first juice bar and hookah lounge that doubles as an event space for locals to rent out, located at 2 Liberty Street, had its grand opening on November 21.

Behind the new business is Dwayne Jordan, a Newburgh resident for the past nine years who is also behind Yenom Holdings, a real estate consultant agency here in the city. Jordan also sits on the Economic Development Board of Newburgh and is extremely active in the community.

What he saw missing was a place for the minority community to come together, especially on Liberty Street, and showcase their talents at one event space.

“I also saw a lot of substance abuse and alcoholism here in the City of Newburgh,” said Jordan. “I wanted to open a safe place where it is a juice bar, with an atmosphere of a lounge, but without alcohol so people could enjoy themselves without being tempted or be enticed by things they’re trying to get away from.”

The space can be transformed for any type of event that is interested in renting the space. Jordan described the space as “contemporary and modern.” So far Jordan has booked comedy acts, a 50th birthday party and other events going into next year.

“It’s an inclusive space,” said Jordan. “Some of the people who host events here said there is only the Elks Lodge and the fire house. It’s the first upscale event space, in an area where they can showcase their talents.”

With COVID-19 positive cases on the rise, Jordan said they’re “taking it day by day.”

Right now they are open three days a week on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 6 to 10 p.m. If nonessential businesses have to close in the City of Newburgh, they will be impacted.

“We’re hopeful for the future,” said Dwayne. “It’s great to get us out there and once COVID-19 is cleared up and we can all be together again and be open.”

However, the grand opening was still a huge success. Orange County Legislator Kevindaryán Luján and other community members, friends and family were in attendance for the event.

“It was great and everyone had a good time,” said Jordan. “On the Liberty Street corridor people think ‘what’s new coming here,’ and this is the heart of Newburgh when it comes to shops and public business.”
