Jacobson, Skoufis call on Hochul to open testing site in Newburgh

Assemblymember Jonathan Jacobson (D-104) and Senator James Skoufis (D-39) are calling on the State Department of Health to open a COVID testing site in the City of Newburgh. Jacobson and Skoufis issued the statement in response to the fact that there is no mass testing facility in Orange and the announcement that a second State-run COVID testing site at SUNY Ulster will be opened in Ulster County in addition to the one at SUNY New Paltz.

“Orange County has failed to open a testing site and it makes no sense to have two State-run testing sites a mere twenty-minute drive apart in Ulster County, “Assemblymember Jacobson said, “Orange County tragically lost twenty-eight residents to COVID just last week and positivity rates are still increasing. I am calling on Governor Hochul to open a testing site in the City of Newburgh as the State has done in the past for vaccines. This site would also be easily accessible to residents of southern Dutchess County due to its proximity to the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge.”

Senator Skoufis said, “As the state ramps up its testing capacity to meet the surge of the Omicron variant, I urge the Department of Health to consider implementing an additional testing site in Orange County. SUNY Orange has already served as an efficient and effective site for mass vaccinations and would allow local residents to keep their families and neighbors safe as a testing venue.”

The SUNY Ulster site is scheduled to open on January 20. There is already a State-run site operating at SUNY New Paltz.
