The Hudson Valley Area Labor Federation will lead a rally to support the United States Postal Service (USPS) on Sunday, March 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the intersection of Route 300 and Route 17K.
The rally follows reports that Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has signed an agreement with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and the General Services Administration to explore cost-cutting measures for the USPS. A letter sent to Congress on March 13 outlined DeJoy’s plans for federal assistance while acknowledging the agency’s financial struggles. Reports indicate 10,000 jobs may be cut, and DeJoy, who was appointed in 2020, is expected to step down after five years in office.
Hudson Valley Area Labor Federation President Sparrow Tobin issued a statement condemning potential cuts and privatization efforts. “The federal cuts from DOGE and threats to privatize the Postal Service will not only harm our local letter carriers but will harm all of us,” Tobin said. “We all rely on the Postal Service, and dedicated employees’ jobs are on the line. An injury to one is an injury to all.”
